Abstract

Background: Cancer treatments often result in side effects that impair mental, sensory, motor, and body system functions. The purpose of this capstone was to advocate for the use of occupational therapy (OT) for the cancer population by gaining advanced knowledge and experience at two sites: a local YMCA cancer survivorship program and an outpatient rehabilitation clinic.

Method: At the outpatient rehabilitation clinic, an intervention and patient log were created and used to influence the creation of education materials for patients and providers. During the cancer survivorship program, psychosocial factors, strength, flexibility, balance, aerobic function, and program sustainability were evaluated. A Pressbook was created to hold all data, research, education materials, and capstone evaluative measures, and was shared with each site.

Results: The OT intervention themes involved in the care of the cancer population at the outpatient rehabilitation clinic included breath work, incontinence training, lymphedema therapy, pain management, strengthening, and general pelvic floor therapy. Four patient/provider education materials were created and shared. Outcomes measured during the cancer survivorship program showed varying improvements between pre- and mid-program assessments. While the post-program outcomes are still being analyzed, qualitative data indicates that participants emphasized the value of the program for their mental, physical, and social health.

Conclusion: The creation and dissemination of education materials and the development of the Pressbook with all information included has contributed to the ongoing efforts to establish and support OT’s role in cancer rehabilitation. Both capstone sites can view and share the Pressbook link to continue advocacy efforts.
