Crouse, Ph.D., David A.
University of Nebraska Medical Center
David A. Crouse, Ph.D., was born in Canton, Illinois, in 1944, raised on several different Army posts, and did not settle into permanent residence in the United States until his teen years. He received a B.S. in Physics (1966) and M.S. in Zoology (1968) from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois. This was followed by two years of service with the Army during the Vietnam War. In 1970, he returned to graduate school, completing his Ph.D. in Radiobiology at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1974. From 1974-1977, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago.
In 1977, he came to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) as an assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy. In 1978 he was appointed to the Graduate Faculty. In 1981 he was promoted to associate professor of Anatomy. In 1987 he was promoted to Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy. From 1991-1992, he served as interim chair of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, and served as Vice-Chair of the department from 1992-1994.
His research interests, primarily funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have been related to the re-development of the immune and hematopoietic systems following bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Most of these studies have been with animal models but extensive collaboration with his clinical colleagues has become the norm as well. He has had teaching experience and recognition in many areas of cell biology and radiobiology.
Crouse served as Chair of the College of Medicine Curriculum Committee during the major change in that curriculum in the early 1990s. He has taken a lead role in developing programs and teaching courses related to “Responsible Conduct in Research” and other important career issues for UNMC graduate students, post-docs and junior faculty. He spent the entire 1994-1995 academic year working in the Chancellor's Office at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as an American Council on Education Fellow. He returned to UNMC, where he served three times as the Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Interim Dean for Graduate Studies, 1996, 2002, and 2011. From 1996 to his retirement in 2012, he was Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at UNMC.
He is the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Golden Apple Award (1980-1981), and the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award (1990). He and his wife have been active volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures.
