Types of Submissions
Original Research
Studies demonstrating effective translation between basic science and practical application, including original investigation, intervention or comparison, cohort, meta-analysis, assessments, observational studies are accepted. Studies with negative results, feasibility studies, pilot studies, replication studies, program development, and practice-based evidence are welcome. Replication studies should contain an introduction, reproduction of key results from the original study, and conclusion comparing study results to the original study. Original research should be ≤4000 words, and include a title, ≤5 tables and/or figures, a structured abstract (250 words) with a plain language summary (150 words), background, method, results, discussion, conclusion, knowledge translation takeaway, and references. Additional files will be accepted.
Reviews
Meta-analysis, systematic, scoping, integrative, and mapping reviews accepted. Use the most current Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist and flow diagram to enhance reporting, as applicable. Reviews should be ≤5000 words, and include a title, ≤5 tables and/or figures, structured abstract (250 words) with a plain language summary (150 words), background, method, results, discussion, conclusion, and knowledge translation takeaway. Additional files (e.g., evidence or risk of bias tables) will be accepted.
Humanities
Humanities submissions allow authors to submit original materials related to the concepts of the journal and enhance the reader's experience. Creative as well as conventional ways to share an understanding of translational science are encouraged. Essay (≤1500 words), poem, my perspective (≤1500 words), painting/art.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Educational submissions include studies promoting effective practices in teaching and learning. Topics can include learning outcomes, instruction, programs, curricula, or original content not readily available in textbooks. Team authorship is preferred, with input from a variety of knowledge users – learners, families, clients, practitioners. Scholarship of teaching and learning should be ≤4000 words, and include a title, ≤5 tables and/or figures, a structured abstract (250 words) with a plain language summary (150 words), background, method, results, discussion, conclusion, knowledge translation takeaway, and references. Additional files will be accepted.
Knowledge Exchange
Submissions may include a letter to the editor, letter in reply, challenges to translating knowledge to practice, or opinion pieces that may serve as a forum for conversation between knowledge users about journal content. (≤500 words)
Theoretical Papers
Submissions describe concepts, explain relationships between concepts, and predict how change occurs specific to translational science in occupation. Papers should be ≤4000 words, and include a title, and ≤5 tables and/or figures. Suggested headings include an abstract (250 words) with a plain language summary (150 words), background, definitions and concepts, relationships between concepts, how change occurs, evaluation and intervention strategies, application, discussion, conclusion, knowledge translation takeaway, and references.
Policy Papers
Submissions address policy from local, national and international levels that matter to knowledge users. These articles present a reasonable and insightful argument, are supported by an equitable observation of evidence, and have a clear translational message. Articles that set out hypotheses are accepted with they contain a convincing attempt to test them. Papers should be ≤1500 words, and include a title, abstract (250 words) with a plain language summary (150 words), and ≤2 tables and/or figures, and include a knowledge translation takeaway.
Case Study
This section of the journal illuminates an experience regarding the knowledge translation process in occupation. These should be easily readable, appealing to a wide audience of knowledge users. Papers should be ≤1500 words, and include a title, abstract (250 words) with a plain language summary (150 words), and ≤2 tables and/or figures, and include a knowledge translation takeaway.
